Das italienische Drama war ursprünglich als Fernsehserie konzipiert, gelangte aber dann doch in einer über sechstündigen Fassung in die Kinos. Es erzählt aus dem Leben einer römischen Familie zwischen den Jahren 1966 und 2000. Das Schicksal der Familienmitglieder wird dabei immer in Verbindung mit den historischen Vorgängen in Italien gezeigt.
