Nein, wie öde! Greg muss mit seiner Familie auf einen Roadtrip quer durch die USA, der mehrere Tage dauern wird. Ziel des Ausflugs ist das Haus von Oma, wo zu deren 90. Geburtstag eine große Feier stattfinden soll. Dass seine Eltern ihm die Reise als „ganz tolles gemeinsames Abenteuer der Familie Heffley“ schmackhaft machen wollen, macht die ganze Angelegenheit nur noch suspekter. Doch was als Inbegriff der Langeweile beginnt, entpuppt sich schnell als perfekte Gelegenheit für einen besonderen Abstecher, denn bei ihrer Reise kommen sie ganz in die Nähe einer coolen Videospiele-Messe. Greg muss da hin! Und so schummelt er mit seinem Bruder Rodrick kurzerhand einen kleinen Umweg in die Reiseroute, der die Familie schnell in das absolute Chaos stürzt…
